Upgrading to WordPress 2.x: A strange error (and fix)

Saturday, June 3rd, 2006

Somtime ago, I upgraded WordPress from version 1.5 to 2.x. The official instructions are simple and clear. Basically the steps include backing up your databases and files, downloading and extracting the new Wordpress package and running the Wordpress upgrade program via your browser.
However, it didn’t work for me.
Running upgrade.php seemed to work and even gave […]

Easy CD burning on Linux with K3b

Monday, February 20th, 2006

Last week I needed to burn a couple of CDs - an activity which I haven’t done too much of. My SUSE 9.3 install, running KDE gave me a couple of options under Multimedia apps for CD/DVD burning: Gnome CD/DVD Creator and K3b. Since I’m more of a KDE person, I tried out K3b.

Goodbye Movable Type, Hello WordPress!

Friday, July 22nd, 2005

I’ve been planning to do this for a while now, and its finally happened. SharadWare is now powered by WordPress. For a little over two years, I’d been using Movable Type. I’ve got nothing against MT - it’s a great product and my heartfelt thanks to it’s creators.
So why did I shift? Well, multiple reasons…

SUSE Linux, WinXP & Access IBM on the ThinkPad T43

Monday, July 11th, 2005

Please read my earlier post Installing Linux on the IBM ThinkPad T43 for background information.
The setup so far: Windows XP Pro & SUSE Linux Professional 9.3 (with GRUB installed in the MBR). Although I had a perfectly functioning dual-boot system at this point in time, the fact that the Access IBM button did not work […]

Installing Linux on the IBM ThinkPad T43

Monday, June 13th, 2005

Recently I acquired an IBM ThinkPad T43. It’s quite a beauty. The machine came preinstalled with Microsoft Windows XP (Pro) and a few addon applications. Almost all of the space on the disk was taken up for use by WinXP and designated as C: by the OS. There is another smaller, “hidden” area of about […]

Linux turns 13

Wednesday, August 25th, 2004

Today, the 25th of Aug, 2004, Linux turns thirteen. Happy Birthday Linux! :)
While on the subject, here is a quick factoid: Linux is not the operating system, as most people mistakenly believe. Linux is the kernel, a vitally essential and core component of the OS. Simply put, the kernel is responsible for allocating a computer’s […]

Windows puckers!

Tuesday, March 4th, 2003

Desktop, open source operating systems have hit the retail market in America with their entry into Wal Mart. They may not be very successful immediately, but believe me, It’s a BIG step forward.
If Linux is made to act and look like Windows, then what’s the point? Read some thoughts about this and then some more […]

Windows is more stable than Linux

Tuesday, February 25th, 2003

Hee hee hee… Ho ho ho… Ha ha ha…
I can’t type too well with all this laughing. I’m sorry. You need to give me a moment or two…
Isn’t it just wonderful, when something like that pops out of nowhere and sets you off into peals of laughter? I’m calm now. Just a huge smile […]

India’s first “Linux Only” magazine

Friday, February 21st, 2003

LINUXForYou Vol.1 No.1 Feb, 2003.
“The Complete Magazine on Open Source”, is how India’s first magazine devoted to GNU/Linux and the world of Open Source Software, describes itself.
This is an event. Trust me.
Before this there have been Indian publications with a Linux-oriented focus, most notably PCQuest. But LFY, published by the Electronics For You Group, […]
